The Writing Workshop
By: Matthew Famele
As a professional writer and published author, writing workshops have proven to be a great asset to fostering proper communication, writing, and editing skills necessary for molding any successful writer. Most, if not all, successful writers participate in writing workshops to hone their skills, and brush up on the latest techniques and tools to enhance their writing potential. If writers in professional fields can benefit from this type of workshop experience, then why can’t all students? This is why I am excited to debut my new program called The Writing Workshop at Milton Learna.
My program will debut in the month of November where I will introduce the program in hour-and-a-half long seminars spanned out over the course of four weeks. These four-week seminars will focus on introducing key aspects I have created for the program in a general sense so our students can get a feel for how Classroom Writing Workshops will proceed. The seminars will be divided into two parts: a lecture consisting of teaching materials that introduce the topic of the day, and a workshop that allows students to brainstorm, write, create, and share their ideas to the community, and have time for professional feedback from myself and their peers.
The four-week workshop will consist of:
1. A general introduction to the program
2. Introduction to Unit 1 - Creative Writing: Unlocking the Potential of the Creative Mind.
3. Introduction to Unit 2 - Professional Writing: Let’s Talk Business
4. Introduction to Unit 3 – Academic Writing: Essays, Book Reports, and All Things Scholarly
5. Introduction to Unit 4 – Editing and Grammar: Polishing Your Copy. For more information about signing up please see details below.

Prior to the enrollment of any student in the Get Set Go program, we complete a thorough assessment to determine the specific learning needs, strengths and areas of improvement of your child, so that we may ultimately provide them with the help that they need. The primary focus of the Get Set Go program is to produce independent learners and confident students. In order for this to be an effective learning experience for each student, we provide each of our students with a weekly, individualized package that includes various materials that have been carefully selected to meet your child learning needs. Below is a list of only some of the concepts that may be incorporated as part of your student’s individualized learning package:
Leveled Readers & Follow-up activities
Phonic Review Worksheets
Beginning, Middle, Ending Sound Worksheets
Tracing Enhancement Exercises
High Frequency Word Lists
We pair each of our early learner students with a qualified and highly trained teacher that will work closely with your child in order to provide them with a comfortable and supportive learning experience here at Milton Learna.
Program is designed to assist students between grade 2 and grade 8, with all of the essential skills that are encompassed within the subject of Language Arts. This program is intended to assist students who are struggling with concepts within Language Arts and further challenge those students who are excelling. Our lessons are carefully planned and prepared in order to meet the specific requirements of each individual student. Each assigned package will focus on targeting a specific skill(s), which may include the following key areas:
Reading & Comprehension
Grammar & Punctuation
Teachers work collaboratively to locate and prepare material based on the assessment report. During lessons, teachers will observe students' academic performance and provide additional support wherever necessary. It is important to ensure that homework assignments are completed for the Language Power program in order to allow for consistent progress.
The Math program is designed to help students develop the key and necessary skills that would allow them to work efficiently, accurately and independently. The Math-a-Magic program is a curriculum based program and includes all the strands of mathematics as outlined in the Ontario Curriculum document. This program is administered to students using a key tool that will not only stimulate their thinking but also enforce independent learning skills; this key tool is the Learna worksheet package. The Learna worksheet package will be provided to each student in which they will be required to complete both, in-class work as well as their homework assignments. Each package given to students will focus on only one strand of mathematics to ensure that the student is thoroughly mastering the skills and concepts specific to that strand. Upon the completion of a Learna Worksheet package, the student will be provided with another package outlining the next curriculum strand in mathematics. Although the Learna Curriculum coincides with the Ontario curriculum, the strands in mathematics will be given to each student at Learna in the following order:
Number Sense and Numeration
Patterning and Algebra
Geometry and Spatial Sense
The program is designed to enhance students' independent working skills, it is important to note that each child is working at their own, individual pace.
